Checking for a Warrant in Washington County
Two offices answer a Washington County warrant question. The Sheriff's Office runs the public lookup, the jail, and enforcement. The District Court holds the charge, the bail, and the next court date. Before calling either one, have the full legal name ready, plus any other spelling the person has used; on the court side, a case or citation number speeds things up.
- Open the county Warrant Search and type any part of the name. Three letters is the minimum.
- Treat a hit as a lead. The county says to confirm every warrant with the issuing agency.
- Call the Warrants Division at 651-430-7998, answered 24 hours a day, to confirm status and learn which court issued it.
- Check the court side in Minnesota Court Records Online, or call Court Administration at 651-413-8030.
- Widen the search when the county comes back clear. Minnesota has no public statewide warrant database.
Note: A blank Washington County lookup result means the list holds no match for the spelling you tried, not that no active warrant exists.
Washington County's Warrant Search Portal
The county's live lookup asks one question and offers one box.
| Field or Control | Type | Required | What It Does |
|---|---|---|---|
| Name | Free text | Yes | Any part of a name, partial matches allowed |
| Letter minimum | Rule | Yes | Results appear after three letters |
| Reset Search | Button | No | Clears the name field |
| Date of birth, case number, court, status | Not offered | No | This is why confirmation calls are needed |
The county publishes that lookup at the Washington County warrant search application.
The Washington County portal offers a single name box, so a common name returns a broad set of matches with no way to narrow them.
Washington County Warrant Types
Minnesota runs one unified trial court. Nearly every Washington County warrant therefore traces back to the same courthouse. What differs is the event that created it, and the public search does not label the categories.
| Warrant Type | How It Arises | Who Issues It |
|---|---|---|
| Arrest warrant | A complaint, citation, or sworn statement shows probable cause | Washington County District Court |
| Bench warrant | A missed court date or no response to a summons | District Court judge, on Form 8 |
| Sign-and-release warrant | A first qualifying misdemeanor or gross misdemeanor failure to appear, with $0 bail since January 1, 2024 | District Court under Minnesota Statutes section 629.415 |
| Probation arrest or detention order | A probation officer asks that a person on supervision be held | Probation officer, entered in the sheriff's system |
| Traffic or payable-citation warrant | An unpaid payable citation or a missed traffic date | District Court traffic division |
| Search warrant | A judge authorizes a search for property or evidence under Chapter 626 | District Court judge, outside the public warrant lookup |
Washington County Warrant Matches Are Leads
The county says so on the page itself. A name in the Washington County lookup is a lead, nothing more. The application tells users to confirm every warrant with the issuing agency, because the sheriff's records and the courts update on different clocks. So a warrant can exist without appearing at all. Arrest-warrant index data stays confidential until custody, service, or a first appearance. A name can also match the wrong person, since the result shows no date of birth. That is why a match calls for two phone calls rather than panic. Note: treat it as a reason to call, not a reason to miss work or pay anyone.
Inside a Washington County Warrant Record
The search page shows less than the paper file. A Washington County failure-to-appear warrant is built on Form 8, and the county's archived complaint files follow the same shape.
| District Court File Number | The case number the court assigns, which the public name result does not show |
|---|---|
| Subject Name | The name as filed, which can differ from the name a person uses |
| Charge or Offense | The offense, with a statutory reference where the complaint lists one |
| Issuing Court | Washington County District Court, Tenth Judicial District |
| Bail and Release Conditions | The amount set and conditions attached to release |
| Execution Scope | Minnesota-only, border-state, or nationwide service, set on the individual warrant |
| Issuing Judicial Officer | The judge who signed, with the date and time |
| Status | Active, served, recalled, or quashed |
Washington County's 24-Hour Warrant Line
The Warrants Division answers 651-430-7998 around the clock, the fastest human confirmation channel in Washington County. Ask whether the warrant is still active, which court issued it, and what comes next. The county also posts a scam warning. Investigators will not call demanding payment, gift cards, or a Social Security number. Hang up and dial the published number yourself. Interpreter services cover court and jail business. For how a warrant reaches the sheriff's system, see the Warrant Search landing page.
Washington County's Warrant Search page explains which court issues a warrant and how the sheriff's system picks it up.
Issuing and Serving Warrants in Washington County
District Court judges issue the process. The Sheriff's Office enforces it. Washington County says District Court issues arrest warrants and forwards them to the sheriff, and probation officers' arrest and detention orders enter the same system.
Process line: complaint or citation › judicial warrant decision › entry in the sheriff's system › service › first appearance before a judge.

Where a Washington County Warrant Question Leads
Washington County spreads across 27 cities and six townships, with service centers in Cottage Grove, Forest Lake, and Woodbury. None of those centers confirms a warrant. Warrant business belongs to the courthouse campus in Stillwater. Two buildings on the same street handle different jobs. The Government Center at 14949 62nd Street North holds the District Court, the court file, and bail for county cases on weekdays. The Law Enforcement Center at 15015 62nd Street North is different. It houses the Warrants Division, the Records Unit, booking, and the jail bail window, all inside the Sheriff's Special Services Division.
If You Have a Warrant in Washington County
Confirm the warrant first, then talk to a licensed Minnesota attorney. The usual paths in Washington County are voluntary surrender, posting bail, or asking the court to recall or quash the warrant.
Important: Talk to a lawyer before turning yourself in. Being stopped with an active warrant can lead to arrest and a bail hearing, and paying a fine online does not clear a warrant on its own.
Voluntary Surrender and Bail in Washington County
Anyone turning themselves in should report to the main lobby and jail window by 5:45 a.m. on a weekday that is not a holiday. Deputies try for the same day's docket. Washington County does not guarantee that. In Washington County, bail is a custody question, not a warrant question. County cases run through Court Administration at the courthouse until 4:15 p.m. on weekdays, then move to the jail administration window. The jail lobby kiosk runs around the clock. It handles limited amounts only. It takes cash in bills of twenty dollars or more, caps card payments, and does not accept out-of-state warrants. Note: after a kiosk or card payment, tell Master Control and allow a few hours for verification and release.
Washington County Warrant Records and Public Access
Minnesota assumes government data are public, then carves out exceptions. Washington County warrant data sits on both sides of that line. An arrest record can be public while the arrest-warrant index stays confidential until custody, service, appearance, or a public-purpose finding.
Key Rules:
Minnesota Government Data Practices Act - Government data are public unless a statute, rule, or temporary classification says otherwise.
Minnesota Statutes section 13.82 - The arrest-warrant index stays confidential until custody, service, appearance, or a public-purpose finding.
Minnesota Statutes section 260B.171 - Juvenile court records are restricted and will not surface in an adult warrant search.
Minnesota Rules of Public Access, Rule 8 - Court files can be inspected in person during business hours, with tighter remote-access limits.
Minnesota Warrant Terms in Plain Words
Minnesota court paperwork mixes criminal-procedure vocabulary with plain words. A few Washington County terms shorten any call to a court or warrant desk.
- Active
- An agency label meaning enforcement has not been cleared or served
- Bench warrant
- Court process issued after a missed court date or a violated court order
- Failure to appear (FTA)
- Not showing up or not responding as ordered; a first qualifying case may use sign-and-release
- Arrest or detention order
- A probation officer's order that a person on supervision be held, entered in the sheriff's system
- Recall or quash
- Court action that cancels a warrant, available only from the court that issued it
- Capias
- A term other states use for an FTA or fine-collection writ, rarely used on Washington County pages
Is There a Statewide Minnesota Warrant Search?
No public one exists. Minnesota has no statewide warrant database that residents can search by name. Minnesota Court Records Online reaches case files and documents, not a live warrant list. The state's criminal-history product works differently. The Bureau of Criminal Apprehension sells public background checks built on criminal history rather than open warrants. A warrant from another county means calling that county's sheriff or court, so a Washington County question still starts at home.
Washington County Warrants by City
Cities here do not run their own warrant courts. Minnesota's District Court hears criminal, traffic, and city-ordinance cases for every city in Washington County. The sheriff serves the warrants that court issues. Each city adds a police department and a records desk.
